Kam Soon & Wendy’s Classic Chinese wedding
23 Jun

Many Chinese couples usually opt for a more western-styled reception nowadays, so it’s nice to see a classic chinese wedding. These pics are from Kam Soon & Wendy’s recent reception and tea ceremony that was organised by WGA Vendor and wedding planner, Natasha from The Peak Xperience. Enjoy!
Why Classic Chinese?
Natasha: Wendy wanted a wedding theme which was more pinkish, sweet and romantic whereas Kam Soon wanted a wedding that was majestic, festive, red and oriental. To compromise, we suggested they go with a Shanghai-inspired wedding, sort of a ‘Paris of the East’ theme which was oriental yet sexy. But after many rounds of changes and discussions, the theme became more and more classic, which was of course pleasing for the older folks! From the morning session right through to dinner, every customary step was properly adhered. We had quite a lot of restrictions given to us – strictly no candles, no bird cages, no butterflies, no black. Hahaha… plus Kam Soon and Wendy didn’t want the standard jazz band where the guests probably wouldn’t know half the songs. So moving along the lines of this theme, the older folks also had a wonderful time singing along to timeless tunes from the 1940-50′s Shanghai era and evergreen English songs from Ben E King, Bee Gees and more.

Kam Soon & Wendy’s story:
W: We first met each other in 1999, in MMU Malacca. We were just friends for 4 years and then in 2003 (2 months before our graduation) we started dating. I never thought it would last very long because we were separated very soon after the graduation. Kam Soon went back to KL and I stayed in Malacca. Guess I just felt it was a case of ‘now or never’, so we maintained the relationship.
But in the end, I was hired by a government agency as a trainee for 6 months in Cyberjaya. I was so unbelievably happy! After 6 months, Kam Soon quickly found me a job in K.L and I’ve never left the city ever since!

How did you know you’d met “The One”?
W: I felt natural when I saw him and was just myself. I don’t have to act like a “lady”, nor worry how I look like – am I looking old or fat? He never judges me on how I look physically and instead sees me from the inside. That makes me feel confident and safe. So confident and safe that I grew from 47kg to 62kg, S size to L size! The fattest moment of my life and yet I’m okay with it, haha! I know I can be with him in any situation, good or bad, pretty or ugly. And I know we can build a family and grow old together.
KS: We are currently running our own business and our clients are all from the States. In 2008, we had to travel to East side of USA for business purposes. We drove ourselves across a few states with only GPS guidance, and found some areas were quite dangerous with many big-sized, unfriendly whites who were quite racist against Asians. To top it off, we had no tour guide and didn’t know anyone there. We’ve were also rejected by banks and clients… a bank refused to open an account for our company and our clients didn’t have money to pay their debt to us. At that time, it was also the tipping point of recession and the atmosphere felt tense. But Wendy and I got through it together, no fights and no quarrels. Ironically, it was the best time throughout the years we’ve been together. We fight a lot, but on that trip, we managed to go through everything peacefully. That was the time we both knew that we were ready to go to the next level.

What is your advice to couples who are about to marry?
W: Make sure you have plenty of time to prepare for your wedding, at least 8 months. And don’t assume you know everything or that you have everything under control. Trust us, you do not and you will not!
Also, get a wedding planner as they know the best! We can’t imagine how our wedding would of been without Natasha. You have to let the experts help you if you want a perfect wedding!
KS: On the wedding day, because there are so many things going on and happening at the same time, everything became a blur and we totally relied on our wedding planner to tell us what to do, what’s next and to check the billing. So it was definitely worth it.

*Sigh* so sweet, I always love a good ‘love story’! It’s true though, a friend of mine said it was the most testing of times that convinced her she had met ‘the one’. At least you get the ‘good times and the bad’ out of the way, eh? Haha.
