A Very British Affair

9 Feb

Love and romance often tug on my heart-strings, and I find it even more special when it happens to my family or friends. When Christine, a fellow Penangite announced her engagement to Kenneth, we were all thrilled and excited for them. I myself, was particularly looking forward to a very British wedding right in London town itself and we were certainly not let down. The night was filled with intimacy, love and laughter, all with that extra twist of a Chinese – English affair.

A Very British affair

The Wedding Theme

It was going to be an autumn wedding and for me, the most romantic time in London (this is when the colours of the leaves change and the sunset remains dusky for hours). Aptly so, Christine and Kenneth chose autumn hues of olive green and beige as the colour palette for their wedding. This was so wonderfully reflected on their wedding stationery.

The Legalities

The civil ceremony was held in the Blue Room at the Westminster Registry Office, surrounded by close friends and family. This was a particularly special venue as Christine’s parents also tied the knot at the same registry office and her birth was also registered at the same place. (more…)

A Melbourne wedding by Andy Lim

29 Oct

Andy Lim

Couple – Alan and Angie
Venue – St Michael’s Church (Melbourne) and Contessa Receptions (Melbourne)
Theme – Gold

Got these beautiful photos from Andy Lim who just got back from shooting a wedding in Melbourne. I love the above pre wedding shot, as the bride and groom really standout against the background and all in all its a very natural photo. Which is what weddings should be after all – the best pics are often the most candid ones!

Melbourne no doubt has some beautiful and traditional churches…

Andy LIm

As Andy mentioned in his recent interview, he has a penchant for taking photos that are very real and capture the ‘moment’!

Gold, gold, gold!

Gold, gold, gold!

You can’t go wrong with gold – it’s always going to give you a feel that’s slightly luxe, regal and classic.

Hey TWG readers! I know it’s a lazy Sunday so I thought I would post something light that would make you smile. Here is a little bit of a fluff and a cute explanation as to why that wedding ring is destined for the 4th finger!

October best deal – Jim Liaw photography

8 Oct

JLP-October-Best-Deal

Welcome to October! As you know every month brings with it some surprises and pluses! I just got an email from Jim Liaw telling me of a great Jim Liaw Photography package… basically you can get your pre-wedding and actual day wedding shoot for only RM 6,800. Not to mention they are giving away one framed Portrait worth RM 1500. Pretty good deal if you ask me..! I know 2009 is the year to be savvy with your ringgit, so if this interests you – drop them a line at enquiry@jimliaw.com or give them a buzz on 012 2753748 (Jacqueline).

Off the cuff, I met Jim a few weeks ago and I can tell you that not only he is considered one of the gurus of wedding photography, but he’s also really easy to get along with (this is important – you don’t want a grumpy photographer!!). I thought I would be cracking the jokes but it was the other way around!

Getting married in HK?

8 Oct

Joleen-Adrian-Convention-ce

I met Joleen years and years ago through some friends in Singapore. She’s a pretty (and smart) lass hailing from HK whom I lost touch with and would randomly bump into now and again! Fastforward to 2009, and I discover via her facebook updates… that she is getting married! Wasting no time, TWG quickly emailed her an array of questions. I must say, this is one of my favorite interviews because Miss Joleen Soo is rather funny. Do have a read and a giggle :)

Joleen meets Adrian

Adrian and I met in the town of Cannes in the South of France.  We’re both in the media industry and were in town for an international television conference.  We found out that we had so much in common and also a lot of mutual friends.  After a few months of friendship we wanted – MORE!! I moved back to Hong Kong where I spent many years of my childhood and we started our life together.  Moral of the story: never turn down a meeting!

Wedding bells are ringing..!

2801-02After we got engaged… we sat down and started planning, and decided we wanted to do separate events for our friends and extended families.  Since his family is primarily from HK and mine visits every Chinese New Year, the first thing we did was secure a date in what we think is the most beautiful hotel in Hong Kong – The Peninsula. Their Salisbury Room has that intimate vintage grandeur I was looking for and top notch staff that are reliable and knowledgeable.  Mind you the Peninsula has one of the most expensive per-table banquet rates in all of Hong Kong, but the small size means that you can afford to spend a little more on each individual guest.  As the wedding pricing includes almost everything plus lots of extras, I didn’t find the price to be too unreasonable. For dinner it’s around HK$1100 a head (max capacity 140 in the Salisbury Room) and for lunch it’s around HK$780 a head (Max Capacity around 70 in the Garden Suite) This includes taxes, open bar and food.

Why DIY?

We had an easy time with the vendors in Hong Kong who are pretty efficient.  Given The Peninsula handles almost everything, I just didn’t see any positive cost/benefit to hiring a wedding planner to sweat the small stuff for me.  I allocated tasks to my sisters and friends.  I have to say this though, my fiancé is as involved (if not more) than I am in planning.  Between him and his groomsmen, they got a lot of work done.  So it would be completely untrue to say I planned everything myself.

Also, I’m a bit of a recycle freak, so any decorations we are sourcing I’m trying to also use them as my home and garden decoration!  I like to keep wastage at a minimum so it was easier to select the various elements myself than have a planner do it.

Challenges – don’t DIY your destination wedding ladies!

J&A

Short-lived smiles..!

Once the family event was secured we turned to venue hunting for our vows ceremony and afterparty for friends. We literally visited 20 resorts in Phuket and talked to another 20 from Bali to Koh Samui to Boracay to Langkawi.  The alcohol tax in all these resorts was KILLING ME!  (more…)
