5 mins with Ken Lim – beauty guru!
25 Mar

When we think of successful business figures, images of serious suits and tough talking come to mind – after all, isn’t capitalism all about the bottom dollar?
Though well-known as an entrepreneur and socialite in Malaysia, Ken Lim has avoided the typical stereotype and is known to give interviews on the importance of mixing ‘soul’ with ‘business’. More so, he’s also shown the industry that you don’t need to be a big name to make a big change. Having spotted a gap in the market for more sophisticated beauty brands, Ken made life all the much better for the in-the-know consumer, by bringing in revered names such as Laura Mercier and Annick Goutal.
Here’s my lil chat with the beauty guru, Ken Lim:
So who is ‘Ken Lim’? Always the beauty maestro?
Haha, not always! I was a financial controller for 7 years before I embarked on a mission to bring in niche beauty brands into Malaysia. My company currently carries 5 brands under our distribution, which includes Aesop, Laura Mercier, Annick Goutal, Creed, Dr Sebagh and soon to be launched, Dr Brandt.
Why beauty you may ask? I guess at heart, I’ve always been a bit vain and thus naturally wanted to use the best niche brands for myself! This passion eventually turned into the business it is today, although I am less vain! Haha.
The beauty market is flooded with options – what made you choose the brands you did?
I love Aesop’s philosophy and the people behind this brand. I also adore Camille Goutal (daughter of Annick Goutal) and her team – they no doubt deserve their reputation as a top perfumery house, and I love their non-mass approach in marketing.
With Laura Mercier, I have actually met her in person a couple of times. Don’t be fooled by the gloss that her cosmetics paint, as she is indeed a very spiritual person.
Of course, the most important thing is the efficacy of the brands – otherwise I wouldn’t of survived in this competitive beauty world. At the end of the day, the products really do work, which is what I love most about them. They deliver.
Planning a wedding is no doubt stressful! Brides often get breakouts before the big day – any secrets to share? (more…)
