If you’re two peas in a pod, why not don identical designs?

An everlasting trend, ‘yellow gold’ is never out of style. Photo above is of a Princess Cut Solitaire and Eternity Ring for Her and Plain Rounded Band for Him.

One of my personal favourites, where couples inscribe their names on the band (just as a literal reminder!). The matte finish also gives the wedding bands a more mod look.

The more the merrier! In Sweden, couples often wear a wedding band as their engagement ring – thus creating a ‘stacking’ effect.

I'm loving the setting!

Maybe I’m just an old-fashioned girl who likes to think of the sparklies as her best friend but I definitely had way too much fun writing my previous jewellery piece. So much so I decided to do another one! We thought it’d be interesting to check up on the fabulous trend of antique designs making a comeback.

This here’s a round brilliant – probably the most popular choice amongst engagement rings. Why? Because it just works. It’s a shape that looks good on most fingers and leaves everyone going “Oooh…” And the extra bling all round is a cool bonus.

Now how’s that for unusual? Does anyone else think that from the side this kind of looks like a royal sceptre or something? A traditional piece perfect for a modern-day queen ;)

I personally like older designs with four-prongs instead of six. It looks less cluttered somehow – but that’s just me, I think I’m OCD that way :)

I think this band looks amazing and it’s definitely for the woman who wants to stand out!

TV Host Sarah Tan hearts her Goldilocks pendant

You know it’s that time of the year again, when everywhere you go, you hear the same ol’ melody, “Gong xi gong xi gong xi ni!” Yes, just in case you’re living in the cave or needed some reminding, Chinese New Year is just around the corner. Personally, I’m a big fan of CNY (being half-chinese may have something to do with it), because what other holiday can you think of where eating, drinking & gambling is a must!

Anyways, besides the typical CNY festivities, did you know that a lot of weddings are held around this time as well? My heart skipped a beat (okay… several beats) while I was writing this article; I couldn’t help but ooh and aah each time I came across a picture of a beautiful wedding ring, which happened very often. Here at WGA, we’ve decided to do a little post on wedding rings because unlike the dress or the shoes, you’re likely to be wearing it for the rest of your life. When you first venture out in search of the perfect wedding ring there are a couple of things to keep in mind to avoid feeling overwhelmed and confused.

Know your type

The choices are endless and with all that variety you’re bound to get confused so it wouldn’t hurt to do your research before heading out in search of the perfect wedding ring. If simplicity is your style then you may opt for a traditional wedding ring which consists of a plain wedding band. If you like your bling then try to narrow down your preferences before you go shopping, after all there are so many different diamond cuts you can choose from.

Get creative

We’re all about personalizing things here at WGA, whether it’s the invitation cards or the deco so we’re definitely up for personalizing wedding rings. You can choose to have your rings engraved with initials, pet names, really anything you want (as long as it fits).

Stick to the budget (well, try to…)

We know this is a big challenge especially when you’ve found the perfect ring and it’s unfortunately out of your budget. First things first, weigh the ups and downs and see whether you can afford to spend a little extra dough on the ring. If you can’t, then fret not; diversify your search and you’ll most likely end up with a lovely ring that is well within your budget.

Below, Sara has kindly shared with us the story of Chris’s ‘fishy’ proposal. Enjoy!

The Proposal

Hi! We are Chris and Sara, creators of Goldilocks and morethandiamonds.com.sg, who you will be seeing here on Wedding Guide Asia as we give you the lowdown on buying jewellery, choosing the right design, budding trends and interesting stories! As an introduction, I thought we’d start with sharing our own engagement story. (Yes we are a couple AND we work together – we even share a desk!)

For Chris’s 30th birthday, he organized a fishing trip in Thailand with some close friends. As our jewellery shop was just in transition between Paragon Shopping Centre and our new service showroom, we decided to make it a company trip as well and invited Chris’ parents (our bosses) and Steve our Diamond expert along.

The day after Chris’ birthday, we rented a boat for everyone to go fishing and snorkeling around the islands. After hours of fishing, some wanted to continue while others were getting restless. It was then when Chris made his catch of the day. He asked me to help him reel it in (since I hadn’t caught anything all day). I walked over, started rolling up the fishing line and saw that there was no fish at the end. “The fish must have gotten away”, I said, slightly disappointed. Chris quickly responded with “Pull it up and I’ll re-bait it for you.” After I pulled up the tackle, Chris’ mum suddenly shreaked: “It’s a ring! Oh wow! You caught a ring!”

I saw the ring attached to the fishing line and looked at Chris. When I saw his nervous face, I realized what he was about to do, and burst out in tears! I was wearing sunglasses and I cried so violently that the tears bounced off the inside of my glasses, like something out of a cartoon.

Chris just stood there like a statue without saying a word. “Get on your knees you moron!” one of our friends shouted. And just like that, Chris proposed to me on his knees. I was still in shock and didn’t realize I had to respond as well. Finally, someone exclaimed, Say yes! You can’t say no in front of everybody now! And so I said, YES!”

Word had already spread by the time we returned to Singapore. With a story like this, our male friends felt that Chris had ‘spoiled market’ – how were they ever going to top what he had just done?!

The Ring

Chris designed the proposal ring with the help of a colleague. Lucky for us, we work with jewellery and I try on rings everyday, so our colleagues knew my finger size.

Chris based his design on a few things. He knew I liked minimalist designs on the chunky side, and that I’m not a big fan of sparkling Diamonds. Being an engagement ring, however, he chose to use a few Princess cut Diamonds anyway, but with a symbolic number. There are 7 diamonds on the outside one Diamond inside! The number 7 is special in western culture. It’s one of the ‘holy numbers’ as we call them in Sweden. The single Diamond placed on the inside of the ring, adds the numbers up to 8, which is a Chinese lucky number!

Chris chose the design because it symbolizes me: “White on the outside, Chinese on the inside”, as he calls it. I love that there is a hidden Diamond – it makes me feel very special.
