It’s been a while since we had some great tunes playing here at WGA, and it’d be nice to have some fresh new ideas for a wedding soundtrack. So today, we’re doing what we love most – turning to unlikely sources. Perhaps of the animated variety.
If you’re an anime fan like me, you would have noticed that it’s pretty easy to get caught up in the emotions, and you’d probably guess that this is largely due to the beautiful music you hear behind all the powerful dialogue. Little wonder – for years, anime producers have turned to award-winning composers such as Shirō Sagisu and Takanori Arisawa, as well as up and coming talents like Yuki Kajiura and Tenmon, for their ear candy.
So, for your listening pleasure, here are our top picks for an anime wedding soundtrack! Enjoy ;)

Anyways, since yours truly bumped into them before CNY, I managed to convince them to do a special shoutout for everyone at WGA. Here’s Blink & Goldfish, on what you should be grooving to at the wedding afterparty:

The first wedding dance.

If you’re an extrovert, you’re probably excited at this chance to bask in the limelight!

If you’re an introvert, your heart is probably beating a little faster that usual.

Yes, it’s time to put your best foot forward (Monday humour sorry) and make that dance one to remember.

As with most weddings nowadays, the music you choose and the dance you dance is completely up to you. Well, and maybe your in-laws!

While some couples get serious and go for dance lessons, others use it as a time to get the party started (and guest spot on Ellen!).

Whatever tickles your fancy, we’ve come up with a few different songs from different genres for all you different brides out there.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Okie, you can NEVER go wrong with “It had to be you”. There are many different versions out there though I do feel Harry Connick Jnr’s is the best. If this song worked for “When Harry met Sally”, then it should work for you too! Off topic, is it me or did he look much better when he was younger?

Click here to view the embedded video.

Unless you’re from New Zealand, you’ve probably not heard of Chris Knox! He’s a famous kiwi singer and his hit song, “Not Given Lightly” is still played on the radio and tele till today. I remember one of my classmates, Dave Delatour (now an actor in Hollywood), sang it to us girls and it has stuck with me since. This is a romantic song with a bit of spunk.

Click here to view the embedded video.

I know it’s not the norm in a Malay Wedding to have a wedding dance, but I did have a friend who married an English guy and decided to keep the tradition. So for the modern couples out there, here’s one of my favourite malay songs, Kau Ilhamku which translates to “My inspiration”.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Okie, so maybe you’re thinking “Steph, these slow songs are sending me to sleep!” and want something with a beat. How about Barry White! The man with the deep voice will have everyone singing along and dancing in their seats. Guaranteed.

Click here to view the embedded video.

These days, everytime I pop into a club in Asia – the biggest night seems to be when hip hop is on! So for all you R&B lovers out there, here is an old favourite of mine, “So into you…” by Fabolous. Just don’t start dirty dancing on the floor y’all.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Right, you’re new age, hip and fun. You’ve been to a million (okie, maybe 5 or 10) weddings and am determined to steer away from the traditional. How about a tune that’s a little nottie and a little cheeky?

At the same time, the message can’t get any clearer than this. “Hello, I love you”. Enough said!

* Whatever you do, just make sure it’s a ‘thriller‘ :)

The subject of music at weddings is sizable to say the least! If I were to cover the many areas encompassed by this subject in a single article – I would surpass the WGA wordcount (and get a cross email from Steph)! Even in a series of articles, I suppose, one would only broach the topic superficially. Still, it’s worth a go.

In this first part I’ll look at some options one has when it comes to that very important ingredient to a wonderful wedding – the music!

String Quartet/Piano

‘Versatility’ may not be the first word that pops into your head when you think of a string quartet or a classical setup.

If you’re drawn to this option because of the texture and sound of classical music but are turned off by the lack of modern feel, it may be worth a second thought. Contemporary music can be arranged for classical instruments and it gives an interesting spin to your favourite hits. Moreover, the look of a string quartet adds a stylish touch to a reception backdrop.

For example, here’s The String Quartet (been on Steph’s Ipod for 2 years!) doing an awesome cover of Coldplay’s “Clocks”:

Wedding band

We can thank Adam Sandler and the movie ‘The Wedding Singer’ for running the good name of a wedding band through the mud. However, a tight band with a charismatic frontman can be a great addition to your wedding reception. If you pick the right band, the genres available can be huge. Anything from jazz to pop is brought to the table by an adaptable band. It’s all there, and good bands are always a guest favourite.

Here are The Engagements with their cover of “Rock with you” by MJ:

DJ

When it comes to all round multipurposeness, the DJ is the most versatile of the lot – ‘anything you can play so can I’. Not as pleasing to the eye as a string quartet or as interactive as a band, what the DJ lacks he makes up in sheer practicality and song choice. With a DJ there is no limit to your songlist.

Just make sure you don’t hire this guy:

Touted as one of Kuala Lumpur’s ‘weddings of the year’, Donovan Tho (Da Funkie Junkie) and Julia Nicholson’s wedding no doubt had the recipe for the perfect reception. With a too cool-for-school 60s theme, guestlist of the who’s who and a venue at a top hotel and nightclub; it was definitely going to be a night to remember.

But before we upload all the picturesque photos, here’s a list of the chosen wedding songs!

After all, as one of Malaysia’s top house DJs who played everywhere from Miami to London, Da Funkie Junkie should know a thing or two about hitting that right ‘note’!

By the way, Donovan requested that I pick my top three. So please scroll down – my favourites are the songs with videos attached!

1) “Sea of love” – Phil Phillips (1959)

This was our march in song for the wedding. This version is the original. It’s our song.

2) “Here, there and everywhere” – The Beatles (1966)

One of Paul McCartney’s masterpieces, from my favourite Beatles album, “Revolver”. As gentle as a white dove. As beautiful as Julia, my love.

Click here to view the embedded video.

3) “C’est si bon” – Rhoda Scott (1976)

Describes the way I feel when I’m with Julia. “C’est Si Bon”, translated in English means “It’s so good”….my point exactly.

4) “Love” – John Lennon (1970)

John Lennon’s genius is apparent in his wordplay. We will definitely be in the same band, writing lyrics and melodies together in heaven and/or the next life.

5) “Woman” – John Lennon (1981)

Everything a man would want to say to the woman he’s in love with.

6) “Til there was you” – The Beatles (1963)

I think of Julia when I listen to this. Beautiful and perfect, just like her.

7) “Could it be I’m falling in love” – The Spinners (1972)

The lyrics articulate exactly how I felt the first time I laid my eyes on her. Astro Boy meets Cosmic Girl.

8) “I’m gonna make you love me” – Diana Ross & The Supremes feat The Temptations (1968)

Goosepimples galore. Just close your eyes, fantasise.

Click here to view the embedded video.

9) “Sleep Walk” – Santo & Johnny (1959)

One of our favourite ALL TIME instrumentals. Truly emotional. Nary a dry eye in the house.

10) “Soulful strut” – Young Holt Unlimited (1968)

Makes us feel like we’re up in a hot air balloon, sipping champagne, with the sun warming our hearts.
