DIY Bride Wong Sze Zen Ties The Knot!

8 Oct

The lovely former Miss Malaysia Wong Sze Zen has made quite a few appearances on WGA. She’s shared her engagement story, Hen’s night and even wrote tips on how to be a DIY bride. And after much planning & hard work, she finally walked down the aisle and said “I do” to her beau Lawrence. The church wedding was held recently in Kuala Lumpur, at St. Mary’s church and the evening reception at Passion Road bar.

If some of her bridesmaids above look familiar, it’s because you’ve spotted Mix FM DJ Jay Menon & beauty queen Deborah Henry. Yours truly was supposed to be there as well! Sadly, Zen’s wedding was right after Elaine’s Hens in Bali – where I contracted a dire form of conjunctivitis and was admitted to hospital. But that’s another story!

WGA readers, please enjoy these beautiful photos shot by Hong of The Photoz.

Zen on being a DIY bride:
The toughest thing I found? To delegate! It was hard to do that because I was planning the KL wedding from Singapore, where I currently live. Luckily some of my bridesmaids came to the rescue at the eleventh hour.

The girl’s had their dresses from BCBG. I bought the gowns for them and luckily they fit!

As for my white gown (by Melinda Looi), I wanted a romantic, fluid and flowy dress without the fuss – so went for a streamline design with a 30s twist. The skirt has hidden gathers of chiffon that showed when I walked and the back had a similar design but with a longer train. I like the effect it had walking down the aisle. The dress was quite simple so Melinda added a touch of drama by beading the tulle veil. It was a really long veil, very nice for the church ceremony!

I ordered a cupcake tower from WGA vendor Cupcake Chic and found they were lovely to work with. Their team were very detailed and painstakingly attached the little blue birds I had made to the top of the cupcakes. Joanne from Cupcake Chic made the frosting messy with edges of chocolate rice, just to create an old-world charm befitting of the church where the wedding was held. Funny thing was the cupcake tower looked so pretty and pristine that guests thought it was too pretty to spoil! Those who did try, loved it. I liked that it was a mix of flavours so it was a surprise for the guests when they took a bite.

Former Miss Malaysia World Zen is engaged!

Being named Miss Malaysia only happens to a select few (well, one person once a year to be exact!), who for the remainder of time have the privledge of saying ‘Hey, I was once Miss Malaysia!’. Once your crown is passed on to the next girl, life takes a different turn. For some, they make it big and become full-fledged celebrities, others enjoy their 15 minutes of fame and fade away. Miss Malaysia World 2003, Wong Sze Zen, decided to opt for the life less ordinary – and despite starring in her first film (“Seed of Darkness” that also starred Amber Chia), said goodbye to the entertainment scene and took up a job offer with World Vision Singapore.

Nowadays she travels to the likes of India, Cambodia and Africa; changing lives if far more instrumental ways then she once did on covers of magazines. They say god rewards the diligent, so perhaps thats why this princess met her prince charming. Here’s an inspiring lil chat I had with Zen about her recent engagement with her partner, Lawrence Adam.

Zen: At Siem Reap. This was our first photo together!

How did you guys meet?

We met totally by chance. He was in town from Singapore and tagged along with a friend to singer Camelia’s birthday party. I had already left the party but my car would not start for no apparent reason. So, while waiting for a dear friend to come save the day, I decided to pop back into the party. I saw you (Steph) and you were talking to Lawrence. I was thinking in my head, “Ooh, hello there!”. And as fate would have it, you introduced us. We had a fantastic first conversation. And then guess what? When I went back to my car, it started up just fine.

Lawrence and I believe that it was divine intervention, for sure! Sade’s “kiss of life” tells our story quite perfectly. (more…)
