Jason Magbanua, master wedding videographer
One of the starring roles a girl gets to play in life, is that of being bride for the day. But if you’re going to truly look like a movie star on the silver screen, then you better have a fantastic videographer. That’s where maverick Jason Magbanua comes in. Say hello to one of Asia’s top wedding videographers who not only flits around the world to shoot weddings, but is the guy when it comes to celebrity weddings in his homeland, the Philippines.
I had the pleasure of bumping into Jason at the Creative Asia Photography contest held late last year. Even though he had literally just arrived and had been speaking all day at the conference – not only was he friendly and in a good mood, but had bundles of energy! No wonder he can travel like no tomorrow *wink*. Though he’s a busy bee, we managed to catch Jason for a quick Q&A, and find out exactly what makes him tick…
Kai and Cyrus’s wedding in Boracay
You have such passion for what you do. What’s the story?
Well, it’s been a great ten years in the industry! I started young when I was just a student at University. At that time I was into storytelling and video production… I enjoyed it so much that editing became a side job for me in my third and fourth year.
I found a niche in weddings and stuck by it to this date.
I would call it Creative Documentation. As a matter of principle, I hardly direct the couple. Conversely, I am trained to have a watchful eye for things that unfold, the littlest of details and the most fleeting of emotions. In that split second, my team and I are trained to capture that moment in the most creative manner possible.
I firmly believe that even if the hotels and churches are the same, the people we film are different and that makes all the difference.
Roxanne and Elton’s wedding in Manila, Philippines

This video above is of Filipino celebrity Roxanne Guinoo who tied the knot with her beau, Filipino-Chinese businessman Angelo Elton Yap. Her wedding vows almost made me cry. When you hear her say them, you can feel all past pains, triumph and joy encapsulated in her words. Although she was a bundle of nerves in the morning, Roxanne was gorgeous. Unmistakably a movie star. Gentle and polite all the way, like her entire family. Everybody was pleasant, you would get a “hi” from every “hello” even from the artista bridesmaids.
And Elton, being Elton, was steady the whole time. Casual viewers may mistake his expression for apathy or stoicism. But NO. He was mostly nervous, but trying to remain calm!
I was expecting scores of press people at the ceremony at San Antonio church but there were none. They were able to keep the wedding the way they wanted it – private. But what surprised me was that the huge parish church was packed to the rafters, which takes quite a lot to fill up. It shows that they are a couple much loved.
Enjoy this painstakingly crafted Same Day Edit.
