Edmund Lee, running the studio his great-great grandfather started
Ever come across a wedding videography studio with 100 years of photography experience? Keng’s Cinematography is actually one of Malaysia’s pioneer photo studios that was opened in the early 1900s by Mr. Lee Weng Chuen. Fast-forward to 2011, and the studio is still family-run and managed by a member of the 5th generation, Edmund Lee. Now that’s what we call a story with history…
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Well, it’s true – I’m a 5th generation Lee who’s carrying on the family tradition of photography by being a wedding cinematographer. Both my wife and I have been running Keng’s Cinematography since year 2009… and if you’re wondering why my great-great grandfather named it keng, it’s because keng is Cantonese for ‘lens’. I guess I’m a true ‘Lee’ because since young my world has very much been about seeing life through a lens… so I guess you could say I’ve been training since forever
Speaking of seeing the world through a lens… What’s your style when filming a wedding?
I think you get the best shots when people don’t realise they’re being filmed – so I try to ensure I’m as unobtrusive as possible. A videographer always sees things differently… Through my eyes, I naturally look for details and angles that create the best composition possible.
Before we get to more serious questions, how about some WGA Quickfire?
Favourite romantic song: It changes from time to time!
Best tracks to put on a wedding video: Nil…
Craziest thing a couple has done on shoot: Burn their wedding gown!
One thing a couple shouldn’t do on shoot: Diffidence.
Best location for a wedding video is: Places with meaning and memories for the couple.
How do you know a couple is truly in love? They ignore me when I’m in the same room with them.
Ok, now we know you a lil better! Right, serious stuff. Why weddings?
Why not? Weddings are always a happy occasion! And it’s always good fun and something you don’t tire of week to week.
You travel overseas a lot to film weddings; do you enjoy this?
Shooting abroad allows me to explore new perspectives, so I can’t complain.
What type of services do you provide?
We have pre-wedding production packages available, which I really enjoy doing. We shoot it like a short film and love story or like a music video and video montage. And of course, we also cover real weddings, that usually comes with a same-day-edit (the evening show).
Out of curiosity, do you ever have couples stress and argue on shoot?
Yes, we sure do! Well, weddings can be stressful so it’s understandable… But the key is to just calm them down. Share some lame jokes… haha.
* Thanks for your time, Edmund! And for those of you who are looking for a wedding cinematographer with generations of skill, then get in touch with Keng’s Cinematography via their website.
